On Monday, January 19, 2009 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - 20
volunteers answered President Barack Obama's nationwide call to
community service. Volunteers came from as far away as Easton and
Basking Ridge to help move the Food Pantry at Frenchtown
Presbyterian Church on 4th Street in Frenchtown into its expanded
quarters. The Pantry Expansion Project was registered online at
www.USAService.org, a website
created to help Americans fulfill our responsibility to do what we
can for our communities and fellow citizens. The volunteers signed
up online, and received their instructions via e-mail.
The Food Pantry at Frenchtown Presbyterian has recently doubled its
clientele, and the space was too small to accommodate all those who
need the Pantry's food. A local bestselling author provided the
funding, and church member Glenn Horvath did the carpentry to
transform part of the Parish House into the Pantry Expansion.
Through the generous food donations from local churches, schools,
and community groups, Monday's volunteers were able to fully stock
the new shelves of the Food Pantry.
